Concept #4

Media is a business and a business must make money to be successful. The media we engage with is constructed in order to make money. Decisions about content, target demographics, media type, source and placement of media are all impacted by these commercial implications.

Consider a visual media that you enjoy; this could be your favourite film, t.v. show, video game etc.

1. Find an example of product placement in this medium and include a photo or clip on your blog.

2. Why would this particular product advertise in this medium? What is the connection between the target audience for the show and the product?

3. Do you think product placement is an effective form of advertising?

Post #2- Media is a Construction

Having just looked at how much effort goes into constructing food that looks appetizing, find other examples of construction/retouching in our society. You may wish to consider celebrity photos, car ads, video game trailers vs. game play etc.

Post at least 2 comparisons of actual photos as compared to a constructed image.

For each of your comparisons, write a short paragraph discussing what the differences are in the photos and your emotional reaction to seeing the differences; are you mad, sad, indifferent, surprised, etc. Explain your reaction.

Blog Post #1- Media Literacy

Using the information from class, write a blog that defines your understanding of media literacy

If possible, provide an example on how this definition can be applied in our daily lives.
